Update

I look forward to seeing most of you tomorrow for Conference Day. In case you need a reminder, here is the schedule for tomorrow.

The morning has been a whirlwind with swimming first thing. The girls have adjusted well and we will finish up next week. The girls swim only Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

We finished reading James and the Giant Peach this week. A graded comprehension check and newspaper project came home in their Friday Folders today.

We read many picture books this week about the women's suffrage movement. We did a class "brain dump" of problems in the world the girls feel strongly about. Each girl picked one and created an "I am" poem today. We will use the poems for our next bulletin board project!

Update

We've spent the week learning about Thomas Jefferson and his accomplishments in preparation for our field trip. This field trip will kick off our Westward Expansion Unit in a few weeks! We had beautiful weather and even got to meet TJ himself! Check out some pictures!

I loved seeing all the creativity today on our first Wordly Wise dress up day!

In math this week we wrapped up adding/subtracting/estimating big numbers! We will complete a unit review on Monday and assess shortly after.

During our writing lab the girls wrote about a witch casting a spell on them. The focus is on organizing thoughts, correct punctuation and including strong verbs and descriptive adjectives. Their edited work will be showcased in the hallway for Conference Day.

I've carved out about 30 minutes each week for the girls to explore a "wonder". This time is called personalized learning time and I know it is a favorite. The girls are working hard to strengthen their research skills and have the freedom to share their information however they would like! The girls have started presenting their projects and I'm beyond impressed. Here is a little peak into how the presentations are going. Ask your daughter to share what she wanted to learn more about!

Reminders:

  • Carpool helper next week is Lizzy

  • Swimming: October 21 - 24,  October 28 -30, from 8:00 - 8:45; Details here

Update

We had a productive week and I know everyone is ready for a long weekend! We had our first "special week" celebration and the girls showered Olivia T. with love. I have added a calendar with special week dates under the "special week" tab and have shown the girls how to find it.

Spelling lists were introduced this week and we walked through what a spelling quiz will look like. This year our lists will be differentiated within the class but follow the same spelling rule. Moving forward, Wordly Wise quizzes will be every other Thursday and spelling quizzes will be every Friday. When the girls return on Tuesday, we will look at the calendar in their agendas and jot down when they will be.

On Wednesday, October 16, the Fourthies will visit Monticello for our first field trip! All of the details for this trip are here. It should be a great day!

Our class will have swimming starting Monday, October 21. Here is a letter from the PE department.

Wrap Up

Blessing of the Animals Oct. 1 at First Baptist, Oct. 2 at Mt. Zion | Cornelius Today

This morning we enjoyed Blessing of the Animals on the green!

Please check out a technology update from Mrs. Kortas.

If you were unable to watch the Singapore Math zoom this week, you can access the video here. There was a lot of very helpful information.

Friday folders went home today. Inside you will find your daughter's unit 1 math assessment, Wordly Wise quiz, as well as our second writing lab. During this writing lab, the girls used their 5 senses to describe a picture while creating a story too. This is such a creative bunch.

In math this week, we used different methods to solve BIG number addition and subtraction problems. Mrs. Applewhite came in for a fun estimation activity and I introduced a quick warm up game called "3 noses". Ask your daughter about it!

During reading we did a quick author study on Roald Dahl and spent some time making predictions before diving into our book. The beginning of our reading time was spent explicitly practicing different reading skills. The last two weeks have been about making inferences. Ask your daughter what it means to make an inference.

In social studies, we talked all about the road to presidency! We had fun looking at a map and following the Inaugural Parade route.
