Update

This Thursday, May 22, 4th Grade will have their End of Year Party from 11:00 - 2:30 (just for students). The girls will have free swim in the Kenny Center, a pizza lunch after in the Assembly Room, and then watch a movie. If your daughter does not like pizza or cannot have it, please send in a lunch for her. The girls may also bring in a blanket and pillow or a stuffed animal for watching the movie.

It's hard to believe this is the last Friday of the school year. We are in major project mode with our civil war museum project. Summarizing non-fiction passages has been a focus this week. I presented the girls with their second bracket challenge to practice this skill! We read about some not-so-famous inventors, decided on criteria for each elimination round, and the girls each selected a champ based on their criteria. The girls learned some interesting facts and will present their champion on Monday!

In math, we practiced ordering and comparing decimals as well as reading decimals to the thousandths. We played "I have, who has" and completed a shopping spree math project.

Update

It was a BIG week in 4th grade. The girls came back from their Middle School visit day full of excitement and equally exhausted. They had a busy morning visiting all of their 5th grade teachers and learning the ropes of middle school. In addition to Wednesday, we also had 2 of our 4 Growing Up Healthy classes this week!

During reading this week, we read a picture book titled The Butterfly that takes place in France during WWII. We completed a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast it to Number the Stars

In math, we are just about finished with our fraction unit. This week we compared fractions with uncommon denominators, practiced finding the simplest form and equivalent fractions.

Next week we will also wrap up our civil war unit. We will finish out the year working on a research project to show off what they have learned.

We loved welcoming all our special guests today! The girls played an interview game, worked on some math mash-ups and showed off some of their awesome projects! Pictures to share from the morning!

On Wednesday, April 30, the Fourthies will spend the morning in the Middle School for an orientation. They will leave the Lower School at 7:50 to attend a Middle School Assembly. Please make sure your daughter arrives by 7:45 next Wednesday!

In reading this week we finished our novel Number the Stars. The girls are working hard on writing the next chapter since the book ended on a cliff hanger. We also spent time analyzing Ellen and Anne Marie and their character growth throughout the book.

In math we continue to work on our fraction unit. This week I introduced finding equivalent fractions in addition to a review of adding/subtracting mixed numbers.

Update

We had a fantastic visit with Angeli Rafer this morning! The girls were fascinated by her story and journey beginning as an artist then to illustrator.

We are happy to announce that the Fourthies will head to Kings Dominion on Friday, May 9. This is a joint field trip with the 4th-grade boys from St. Christopher's. The field trip is science-themed and focuses on the science of roller coasters. All of the trip details are here. Please note that there is a form to complete on the field trip form about your daughter's lunch preference that day. We would appreciate having the form completed by Friday, April 4

We finished our first chunk of concepts with fractions this week. The girls took a quick check in and did so well. Now that we are adding and subtracting fractions, we move to improper fractions and mixed numbers. Since this unit is so hefty, we will continue to lump it into smaller sections.
For Wordly Wise, we are moving a bit quicker through the lessons to ensure we complete most of the lists in the workbook. We will keep the Wordly Wise quiz updates in our agenda for the rest of the year. Today, we started a fun writing project where the girls interviewed a Fourthie from another class. We emphasized the importance of asking big questions to go a bit deeper into our understanding of one another. We even got to enjoy this gorgeous weather during our interviews!
Next week, the girls will write about their friend they interviewed and also create a magazine cover.

Update

I loved being back with my girls this week. We enjoyed hearing about each other's spring breaks and kicking off some new things. Next week we will begin our musical rehearsals. In case your daughter is unable to get into Google Classroom at home and would like to practice the songs, here is the folder of music!

Exciting news:  Children's book illustrator Angeli Rafer is visiting the Lower School on Friday, March 28! She will be speaking to the Fourthies from 9:30 - 10:30 in the library. If you are interested in pre-ordering a book for her to sign on the day of her visit, please visit this link to learn more.

We focused on the theme of friendship during our writing lab this week! The girls invented a machine where two friends had to use teamwork to receive a prize or rewards at the end. We practiced writing attention grabbing "hooks" to grab their reader's attention at the start of their descriptive paragraph. The girls were also challenged to include a set of directions in their writing that would teach the reader how the machine works. This was much harder than they thought it would be! Lower School teachers have already been admiring their creativity. This project will come home in a few weeks, but here is a sneak peek at their pictures.

In math, we kicked off our fraction unit. We explored some different manipulatives, reviewed important vocabulary, talked about different ways to decompose fractions and started adding fractions with common denominators. I spent a little time this week introducing PEMDAS and order of operations. I told the girls it was a "commercial break" from our fraction time and that this would be a little preview to next year. They will go into more detail next year.

In reading, we began our next novel, Number the Stars. We learned a little bit about WWII and Denmark to prepare our minds for the setting of the novel. We also began a "mythological creature" bracket for our own version of March Madness. The girls had to choose criteria to judge the creatures and move them through the brackets. They are reading about various creatures and explaining their thoughts as they advance creatures through their bracket.
